Margarita Ruiz, the State Coordinator for Chiapas for The Hunger Project (THP)-Mexico, was awarded the "State Prize for Youth" from the state of Chiapas.

This is the highest award granted by the state government to young people for their commitment to the state's development. Margarita was cited for her work in community mobilization and received the award on December 14, 2009.

It is important to mention that only a few months ago, Margarita was facing "normal" conditions for women in her community in which women are barely allowed to leave their houses. As she and her group of women from J'pas Joloviletik cooperative have been participating in THP workshops, new opportunities have been opening up. This prize is just one of many more to come.

Margarita was a featured speaker at THP's 2009 annual gala fall event. See a video excerpt. Read her speech.
