Two New Rural Banks Recognized in Malawi

Champiti Epicenter Rural Bank Recognition

The goal of the Microfinance Program in each epicenter is to have the facility gain government recognition as a licensed Rural Bank, owned entirely by community members and managed by a majority female board. The Rural Bank then provides the entire epicenter community with sustainable access to savings and credit facilities. THP-Malawi is therefore happy to announce the recognition of two new Rural Banks in Champiti and Ligowe Epicenters.

1,000 Days Programs Implemented in Four THP-Malawi Epicenters in 2012

The 1,000 Days Initiative – a childhood and maternal health program – was implemented at four of THP-Malawi's eight epicenters. Other program expansion included the inauguration of the Dutch-underwritten Kachindamoto Epicenter and a series of staff trainings at the 2012 Africa Conference in Burkina Faso.

THP-Malawi's Mpingo Epicenter maternity unit was constructed in 2009; however, the facility lacked medical equipment as well as professionally trained staff to oversee deliveries. Since 2011 a partnership has formed resulting in a facility with a four-bed, fully equipped modern delivery room; a 10-bed prenatal ward; and a 10-bed postnatal ward so women can deliver their babies safely.
