Located in East Africa, Ethiopia is historically a rich country. Ethiopia's poverty-stricken economy is based on agriculture which accounts for more than 41 percent of its GDP, employing 85 percent of its population. With an estimated population of 93.8 million people, 78 percent of Ethiopians struggle with an income below US$2 a day.The Hunger Project has been working in Ethiopia since 2004, and empowers partners in six epicenter communities to end their own hunger and poverty.

Jaldu Epicenter Savings and Credit Cooperative Honored for Outstanding Achievement

Gudatu SACCO cups

Gudatu Saving and Credit Cooperative (SACCO), or rural bank, of The Hunger Project's Jaldu Epicenter in Ethiopia has been awarded two cups and certificates for its outstanding work in mobilizing the highest number of women members and the highest saving amounts among other SACCOs at the regional and federal levels.

Two New THP-Ethiopia Epicenters Inaugurated in 2012

Two investor-underwritten epicenters, Enemore and Wurib, were inaugurated at ceremonies attended by Hunger Project leadership. Five of the six epicenters in Ethiopia are maintaining nursery school classes, with a ratio of 1.2 girls enrolled for every boy, and a new health center opened to serve rural community members.

Rennovated School Draws Students, Teachers

Bortene School is located in one of the villages of Enemore Epicenter. THP-Ethiopia, in partnership with the community, made major school renovations last year attracting a large community of students, parents, and teachers.
