Prabhu L. Pingali

Prabhu L. Pingali has nearly 30 years of experience in assessing the extent and impact of technological change on agriculture in Asia, Africa and Latin America. He has authored, or co-authored, nine books and over 90 journal articles and chapters focusing on technological advances and environmental and agricultural policy.
Among his many research projects, some of Mr. Pingali’s most significant work was a 15-year project in Mexico and the Philippines, quantifying the human and environmental costs of pesticide use in small-holder farming — research that won him several international awards.
Mr. Pingali has held a number of prestigious positions in his field including Director of the Agricultural and Development Economics Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization at the United Nations. He now serves as Deputy Director for Agricultural Development Policy at The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to solve chronic hunger and poverty through agricultural development.
