African Women's Development Fund
Bisi Adeleye-Fayeme is Executive Director and Co-founder of the African Women's Development Fund, a grant-making foundation that supports local, national and regional organizations in Africa working to promote women's rights in Africa. Since October 2001, AWDF has awarded grants of nearly US$8 million to over 500 women's organizations in 41 African countries.
Prior to her role at AWDF, Bisi was Director of Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA), an international development organization for African women based in London with an African regional office in Kampala. While there, she established the African Women's Leadership Institute, a training and networking opportunity for young African women. AWLI has trained over 3,000 women across Africa, some of whom are now in senior decision-making positions as Ministers, Members of Parliaments, academics, civil society leaders and employees of international organizations.
Bisi is an Adviser to the Global Fund for Women (USA) and Mamacash Foundation (the Netherlands); Editorial Board Member of Alliance Magazine (UK); a Board Member of the Partnership for Transparency Fund and the International Women's Health Coalition; Synergos Senior Fellow, a global forum of senior executives of philanthropic institutions; and Co-Chair of the International Network of Women's Funds.
Bisi has also served as a Trustee of Comic Relief (UK) for three years and a member of their African Grants Committee for five years; President of the Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) from 2003-2005; and as a resource person to UNIFEM, UNDP, UNECA and several other regional and international bodies. In 2006, Bisi was recognized by the African Media Summit for creating positive images of Africa. In 2007, she received the "Changing the face of philanthropy" award from the Women's Funding Network.
Bisi has a B.A. and M.A. in History from the University of Ife Ile-Ife in Nigeria (now Obafemi Awolowo University), and an M.A. in Gender and Society from Middlesex University in the United Kingdom.
Bisi Adeleye-Fayeme is a leading voice not only in African women's rights movement and civil society, but in the global women's movement as well.
