A Report on Women Candidates of the Bihar Panchayat Elections 2006

A GIANT LEAP FORWARD TOWARDS WOMEN'S POWER

Summary

This report, based on twenty case studies, reinforces the need for increased training of women to enable them to take better advantage of the opportunity provided by the reservation of certain political seats for women. There are inspirational stories about poor, grassroots women (most of whom have been trained by The Hunger Project) who, with the support of their families and communities, have been able to directly participate in the Panchayati Raj system. There are also revealing stories about women who lost elections because they were victims of patriarchal and caste domination, as well as corrupt electoral practices. This overall positive report looks into ten wins and ten losses, and leaves readers full of hope for the future.
