OCTOBER 1997 - IN MEMORIAM
John Denver
John Denver, cofounder of The Hunger Project, died in a plane crash off the Monterey, California, coast on 12 October 1997. John had planned to perform at The Hunger Project’s 20th Anniversary Celebration in New York on 18 October 1997. In paying tribute to him, Joan Holmes stated, "The Hunger Project has lost a member of its family. John loved The Hunger Project, and The Hunger Project loved John Denver."

John served on the global board of directors from 1981 to 1993. He was a major financial investor through the Financial Family every single month, from the beginning of its existence until the end of his life.

John traveled to Africa for The Hunger Project to alert the world to famine there in 1984. He gave a benefit concert for The Hunger Project in Bombay after a global board meeting. He sang for Hunger Project participants in India, Europe, the U.S. and Africa.
John’s children have requested that contributions in his memory be made to the Windstar Conservancy, The Hunger Project and the Cousteau Society. More than 300 individuals have given memorial contributions to The Hunger Project in John’s name.
