Millennium Development Goals
#5: Improve Maternal Health
The
most egregious disparity between the developed and development world is
maternal mortality. In the development world, one woman dies in
childbirth every minute. In Africa, a woman has a one in 16 chance of dying
in childbirth - in the developed world, only one woman in 4,000 dies in
childbirth. Yet the interventions necessary to dramatically reduce maternal
mortality are straightforward and not terribly expensive. It is outrageous that
in the 21st century, women have so little status that we cannot protect their
lives at the very moment they are giving life to others.
Through improving awareness, education, availability of health care and - most importantly - raising the status of women within society - The Hunger Project is driving down maternal mortality rates everywhere that we work.
