In just a few short hours, investors, staff and friends of The Hunger Project (THP) from more than 20 countries will be coming together for our annual gala weekend of events, under the theme: It's Time! Scaling Up THP to Achieve a Hunger-Free Future.

THP has a deep and informed understanding - inspired by the creativity, resilience and determination of the millions of people with whom we have partnered over the years - that through true empowerment, it is indeed possible for women and men to end their own hunger and poverty. Throughout the weekend, we will be highlighting how it is, indeed, THP's time to scale up our work as never before.

We have recently released our strategic direction document, which sets out our long-term vision of how to achieve a future where all people gain the opportunity to lead healthy and productive lives and build a better future for their children. This strategic direction is about building on the achievements of the past to grow the organization and expand its scope via three defined strategic priorities: partnerships, advocacy and impact.

THP is already making enormous progress on all three fronts. Some highlights are featured below.

We will review progress and update our strategy every year to ensure that our focus is firmly on our priorities, that we are always ready to respond effectively to new challenges, and that we are united as one team in striving to fulfill our vision of empowering millions more of our sisters and brothers around the world to achieve a hunger-free future.

Partnerships

The luggage and accessories company, Vera Bradley, has pledged US$10,000 from sales of their exclusive, new, reusable Market Tote bags to THP. The exclusive, eco-friendly bags will be available from October 17 through November 2 at participating retailers. Newmark Knight Frank is a Patron Sponsor of THP's Fall Event this coming weekend. Their support is helping to underwrite the costs of the event.

Advocacy

Over the past six months, THP has been working with others in the UN, World Bank and US State Department, to incorporate key elements of our three-pillar approach to shape, where possible, the new $20 billion Global Food Security Initiative launched in September by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Impact: Did You Know?

...that in the last six months, THP trained 214,540 partners, 62% of whom were women? Over the past year, THP has established an organization-wide approach to monitoring and evaluation, which has resulted in a systematic set of quantitative measurements received directly from THP's Program Countries. Participants at the event will get a sneak peek at some of the results this weekend...and we will share them with you next month!

Making a Difference

Mary Liwonde became involved with THP-Malawi in 2005 when she attended a Vision, Commitment and Action Workshop (VCAW). Before, she could barely grow enough food for her family's consumption. She said, "I felt hopeless, but through the VCAW, I regained myself and decided to do something to change my life."

Within one year, Mary increased her harvest four-fold, thanks to THP's trainings and Microfinance Program. And, in 2007, Mary was cited as Malawi's National Best Farmer of the Year by a major international agricultural company.
