Mozambique Honors World AIDS Day 2012

On December 1, 2012, a village of Chokwe Epicenter in Mozambique hosted the district World AIDS Day ceremonies.

The meeting was organized by Chokwe’s local government through the district’s Women’s Health and Social Action Service, in partnership with a variety of NGOs working in the region. Approximately 400 people participated in the festivities, including residents of Chokwe Epicenter’s partner villages, activists from NGOs and government representatives.

THP-Mozambique was represented by its Program Officer, Mr. Cadir Chaichai.

The ceremonies included cultural presentations of singing, dancing, theater and speeches. Individuals living with the disease gave testimonies to raise the community’s awareness of the need for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. Several HIV/AIDS organizations set up an on-site health fair where community members could receive voluntary testing and counseling -- a resource that drew significant interest from the event’s participants. The day closed with a complimentary meal for all in attendance.
