Literacy and Women's Leadership Drive THP-Senegal in 2011
Update to the Global Board
Quarter 1 was distinguished by organizational meetings held across almost all epicenters; these were exceptionally well-attended by the female partners of the epicenters. The meetings covered committee structure, mobilization, activity plans and committee elections. THP-Senegal also created a staff position for the income-generating activities (IGAs) and Rural Micro-Enterprise, expanding the staff focused on bringing epicenters to self-reliance. Throughout Quarter 2, THP-Senegal’s successful organic hibiscus (“bissap bio”) continued, supporting women’s groups who grow, dry and sell the sought-after hibiscus leaves.
- Water and Power at Namarel Epicenter: Thanks to new solar panels and a water system installed at the Namarel health post, water and electricity are now available for use in patient care.
- Winter Break for Literacy Students: Upon recognizing that absences accumulated during periods of heavy agricultural activity, THP-Senegal instituted an official winter break from classes in order to normalize attendance at literacy classes.
- Strong MFP Portfolio: In Quarter 2, a doubling of Microfinance Program (MFP) committee mobilization workshops led to high performance across THP-Senegal’s microfinance portfolio.
- Women’s Leadership: For the first time ever within THP-Senegal’s 10 epicenters, a woman was elected head as President of the Namarel Epicenter Committee, the epicenter’s primary governing body. She will lead the Epicenter Committee in its annual planning, its budgeting process and other managerial needs.
- Literacy Animators’ Association: At both Coki and Dahra Epicenters, THP supported the creation of an association of Literacy Animators in order to sustain gains in literacy and to simultaneously advocate at the local government level for further financing of literacy and non-formal education projects at the epicenters, especially once these epicenters are fully self-reliant.
