April 2008: Update to the Global Board (Mexico)

DSCN1661.jpg

Introduction

The expansion programmed in the three states where we are working, Durango, Zacatecas and Chiapas, has created an intense phase of mobilization in those regions. We continue to develop a stronger relationship with the local authorities of the communities, with the municipal presidents of the municipios and with the state government.

In order to succeed in this expansion we have created a partnership with government agencies from Durango and Zacatecas to have a group of their staff be trained as Hunger Project trainers and we had the First Training of Trainers with a group of ten trainers.

Another important partnership was established with the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey ITESM, Campus Zacatecas with their program Social Enterprises Incubator. The partnership enables us to work together in creating legally incorporated enterprises from the projects arising in the communities. The ITESM will advise the groups of projects through their incubator process, which includes training in finances and legal aspects. We will look to expand this partnership to the rest of the states where we are working, since the ITESM has a campus in every state of Mexico.

Oaxaca

In December last year we decided to again take up out work in Oaxaca since the armed conflict is now over. We have started with a six-month research phase that includes a diagnosis of Oaxaca after the conflict in order to have a current picture of the poverty in Oaxaca. This will also enable us to have information of how the conflict changed social dynamics that may or may not facilitate the intervention of The Hunger Project in the state and to identify the best region in which to launch our work in this new era of Oaxaca.

As part of the diagnosis, The Hunger Project brought together 32 representatives of government and contending people's organizations to pursue a nonviolent strategy for resolving the conflicts. We worked in partnership with the Nonviolent Peace Force from Ecuador, which has great experience in empowering contending parties to find common ground and peaceful pathways to progress. The group looked in particular at linkages between the current violence and the conditions that hold hunger and poverty in place, and identified action steps to move forward.

The results of the workshop were analyzed and the structural causes of the poverty and violence were identified. From there the team in Oaxaca is currently undertaking interviews with the strategic people from each of the groups of the society to know their own position and interests in Oaxaca.
