April 2008: Update to the Global Board (Senegal)

Below is a table outlining the detailed achievements that took place in each epicenter during the period October 2007-March 2008. This report was submitted to the Global Board of Directors in preparation for the April 2008 meeting. The report refers to the four phases of the Epicenter Strategy. Mpal Epicenter

Start Year: 1991

Phase: 4

Major Accomplishments

  • A support program for children's nutrition, PARUFAM, was re-launched under newly elected leadership.
  • 130,000 100g-bags of nutritional powder for children produced by the women of the epicenter were ordered.
  • 20 groups of women from different epicenter partnered to sell the nutritional powder.

Dahra Epicenter

Start Year: 1999

Phase: 4

Major Accomplishments

  • Two animators were retrained for monitoring of projects.
  • 663 people were mobilized (622 women; 42 men) for 20 Vision, Commitment and Action Workshops (VCAWs) for food security, organizational development and health.
  • Two tons of millet, 1.6 tons of niébé (type of peas), 300 kg of peanuts, 200 kg of millet seed, and 200 kg of niébé seed were collected from the community to be put in the food bank.
  • 300 chickens were raised and sold by the epicenter community.
  • 1,683,240 FCFA (US$4,120) was earned from dairy production at the epicenter.

Coki Epicenter

Start Year: 2001

Phase: 4

Major Accomplishments

  • Two animators were trained for project monitoring.
  • 1,204 people (973 women; 231 men) participated in 35 VCAWs discussing early marriage, vaccination and food security.
  • 4.65 tons of millet, 25.8 tons of maize, and 33 tons of animal food were stocked in the food bank.

Namarel Epicenter

Start Year: 2002

Phase: 1

Major Accomplishments

  • Two animators were trained for project monitoring.
  • 143 people (108 women; 35 men) participated in VCAWs discussing early marriage, vaccination and food security.
  • The food security committee was renewed and 17 members were trained in business and financial management.
  • 10 tons of millet, six tons of rice for food, and five tons of rice for animals were stocked in the food bank.

Dinguiraye Epicenter

Start Year: 2001

Phase: 2

Major Accomplishments

  • 142 people (120 women; 22 men) participated in seven VCAWs.
  • Local authorities donated two hectares of land on which to build the L-shaped epicenter building.
  • Construction of the epicenter building began.
  • There was over three tons of millet stocked.
  • Seven members of the management committee for the village store were trained.
  • The store was loaned 500,000 FCFA (US$1,224).

Sam Contor Epicenter

Start Year: 2002

Phase: 1

Major Accomplishments

  • Two animators were trained for project monitoring.
  • 292 people (246 women; 46 men) participated in 11 VCAWs.
  • Three tons of millet and 138 kg of niébé seed were stocked.
  • Two hectares of land were identified to be the future site of the L-shaped epicenter building.

Diokoul Epicenter

Start Year: 2002

Phase: 1

Major Accomplishments

  • Two animators were trained for project monitoring.
  • 878 people (791 women; 87 men) participated in 46 workshops on food security, leadership, access to education, etc.
  • The food security committee was restructured. It is now composed of 12 leaders from different villages.
  • 3.09 tons of millet were stocked.

Koul Epicenter

Start Year: 1999

Phase: 1

Major Accomplishments

  • Two animators were trained for project monitoring.
  • 446 people (344 women; 102 men) were mobilized in 15 VCAWs on leadership, food security, the environment and the Epicenter Strategy.
  • Seven health committees were put in place in different epicenter villages.

Ndereppe Epicenter

Start Year: 2001

Phase: 2

Major Accomplishments

  • Five groups of women were trained in financial management and food processing.
  • 494 people (442 women; 52 men) participated in 13 VCAWs.
  • The food security committee was restructured and has 12 members.
  • 3.413 tons of millet were stocked in the food bank.
  • Five groups of women were trained to sell nutrition powder for children.
  • Two hectares of land were identified and donated to the epicenter committee for the construction of the L-shaped epicenter building.

Ross Bethio Epicenter

Start Year: 2000

Phase: 1

Major Accomplishments

  • Two animators were trained for project monitoring.
  • 208 people (206 women; 2 men) were mobilized in 9 VCAWs on leadership, food security and the Epicenter Strategy.

Sanar/Ndiaye Epicenter

Start Year: 2002

Phase: 2

Major Accomplishments

  • Two animators were trained for project monitoring.
  • A General Assembly meeting was held at the epicenter. 1,801 leaders were present; the epicenter committee was restructured, as were other management committees.
  • 138 people were mobilized during six VCAWs on leadership, food security and the Epicenter Strategy.
  • International Women's Day was celebrated by over 300 women and 50 men in the presence of a gender expert.
  • Three groups of women committed to sell children's nutrition supplement produced at Mpal.

Dodji/Labgar Epicenter

Start Year: 2002

Phase: 1

Major Accomplishments

  • Meeting with leaders on microcredit disbursement.
  • 145 people (121 women; 24 men) were mobilized during five VCAWs.

Rosso Epicenter

Start Year: 2000

Phase: 1

Major Accomplishments

  • Meeting with leaders on microcredit disbursement.
  • 220 people participated in six VCAWs.
  • Production of 50 environmentally friendly wood burning stoves.

Sagatta Gueth Epicenter

Start Year: 2001

Phase: 1

Major Accomplishments

  • VCAWs were conducted in three villages - Sagatta Gueth, Naméne and Mayaye.
  • Monitoring was conducted on the village stores in Mayaye and Naméne Amar.

Saly Velingara Epicenter

Start Year: 1999

Phase: 1

Major Accomplishments

  • 138 people participated in VCAWs in the villages of Thaoum, Saly, Nianing and Malicounda.

Richard Toll Epicenter

Start Year: 2002

Phase: 3

Major Accomplishments

  • 126 people participated in four VCAWs in Ndombo, Thiago and Dagan.
