Last week, April 23-25, Nobel Peace Prize Laureates from around the world gathered in Chicago for the first ever US-hosted World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates to discuss pressing issues and share wisdom with students, youth and professionals. The Hunger Project was proud to co-host a highly successful parallel event during the 56th Commission on the Status of Women this February in New York City titled “Thousand Days: Improving the Nutrition of Rural Women.” It was held in association with Franciscans International, Bread for the World, Thousand Days, Family Care International, African Methodist Episcopal Women, and the Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations and featured four distinguished panelists who tackled the question: why is investing in good nutrition pivotal to sustainable development?

In September 2000, the leaders of 189 nations made a commitment to achieve specific results by 2015 in eight major areas of international development, results that have come to be known as the Millennium Development Goals. Now, 12 years later, reports reveal the successful, early achievement of a target of MDG 7: Halve the proportion of people who are unable to reach or to afford safe drinking water.

The Microfinance CEO Working Group meets once a month to discuss the challenges practitioners face within the industry and to develop responses. In their latest brief, Road Map for the Microfinance Industry: Focusing on Responsible and Client-Centered Microfinance, they highlight three different microfinance initiatives that are aiding in the delivery of more equitable, transparent and effective microfinance services to clients in developing countries.
