2000: The South Asia Initiative formally launched, including the first annual National Girl Child Day. The first group of experienced women animators are trained to lead the 4-day animator training. Catalysts complete their 2-year training program, and commit to shift the Hunger-Free Zone strategy into a "women-centered, Union parishad-based strategy - putting the strengthening of local democracy squarely into our strategy.
- 1999: At their second annual reunion, more than 1,000 animators accept Joan Holmes's challenge to make training women animators the highest priority action - the key strategy to unleash the human spirit of women for the end of hunger. Animators begin using a 40-point measurement tool to track progress.
- 1998: A delegation from Bangladesh attends The Hunger Project's Women's Initiative conference in Jaipur, India, and begins making addressing gender discrimination a top priority in The Hunger Project's work. Following the first animator reunion, a two-year "catalyst" training program is launched to provide ongoing empowerment to 200 catalysts to create hunger-free zone strategies in their area. May: Charter investor Karen Herman reports on her impact assessment visit. June: Case studies published from Dhaka and Gaibandha.
- 1997: First "district-wide" mobilization reaches all 2-million households in Gaibandha to halt iodine deficiency.
- 1996: The Hunger Project works with the Youth Ministry to devise an intensive 7-day agricultural training program, and begins providing income-generating skills training to thousands of youth.
- 1995: The most experienced animators begin creating hunger-free zone strategies in clusters of villages in 10 districts. Bangladesh Update 12/95.
- 1994: The Global Board of Directors holds its first meeting in Bangladesh, and participates in a National Strategic Forum organized by The Hunger Project on the subject "What constitutes an enabling environment for the poor to succeed in their own development?" (See full text).
- 1993: Badiul Majumdar becomes Country Director, and co-creates with Joan Holmes an initial two-year strategy to call forth what's missing - a vision of a self-reliant Bangladesh. The "Vision, Commitment and Action Workshop" is created and launched.
- 1992: Joan Holmes makes her first visit to Bangladesh, begins working with THP volunteers to create a new strategy.
- 1991: Hurricanes ravage parts of Bangladesh. On Hatia Island, Hunger Project volunteers are the first to respond.
- 1990: Students at Dhaka University establish a chapter of The Hunger Project-Bangladesh with the renowned journalist, Gias Kamal Chaudhury as chief advisor. Students organize candlelight vigils calling for their government to take action at the World Summit for Children.
